Set Your Mind on Things Above

In Col. 3:2, Paul tells the Colossians “Set your mind or affections on things above, not on things on the Earth.”  Have you ever wondered what this request means?  The correct answer is important because in Phil. 3:14-19, Paul tells us that we need to mark those who are pressing toward Heaven.  He also tells us that those who are not pressing toward Heaven are enemies of the cross.  He finally tells us in verse 19 the reason they are enemies is because their mind is on earthly things and not things above.

Tell me some things that the Bible teaches that we should set our minds on or think about?  Read Rev. 21:1-4, I John 1:7-9, Acts 1:9-11, Gal 5:22-23, and Phil. 4:8.

These and many other things are the things we are to think about to exercise our souls.  These are the things if we put them in our minds or thoughts that will help us to be faithful servants of Jesus and also live eternally above in Heaven.

Tell me some Earthly things that we must keep out of our mind sometimes referred to
as Earthly things.  Read Rom 12:17, Rom 12:19, Rom 13:10, Rom 13:13.

These and many Earthly thoughts will cause one’s soul to be lost for an eternity and never go up to Heaven.

We must train our minds to be set on things above.  The spiritual things of life must be first and foremost in our minds.  Yes, we must also look to help others in their physical needs and that should come naturally for a spiritually minded person.  What we must always put first in our thoughts is to help others’ spiritual needs so they might be saved and be faithful servants of Jesus and not an enemy of the cross.
