Putting Others First
We live in a world today that shouts out “Get all you can while you can.” The world today tells us that you come first and not others. This philosophy is so opposite of what God says for us to say and do. It’s so opposite of the life Jesus lived and commanded us to follow. God made us in His image and to glorify Him in all we do. This means that we put God first, others second and ourselves last.
Here is how God says we should live and treat others. We are told to:
- Love our neighbors and even our enemies. Matt 5: 43-44
- Forgive others and not hold any grudges. Eph. 4:32
- Not envy others but be glad for their successes. Proverbs 23:17-18 4. Not boast about our achievements but praise others. Proverbs 27:2 5. Not gossip and put down others. Proverbs 11:13
When we look at the life of Jesus, we see a life of someone who came to serve and help others. Of course He helped them physically with the many examples of healings He provided for the sick. He also showed His service to others by providing food for the hungry. Most importantly of course He came as the only savior to shed His blood for all our sins.
Let’s look at our lives each day and ask ourselves if we are providing help for those with physical needs. Are we helping those with health problems by checking up on them and praying for them? Are we helping those who are hungry by providing a meal? Most importantly though are we helping them in their spiritual life to learn about Jesus and be a faithful servant of His?
Yes, the world may tell you to get all you can while you are here on earth but remember you will be judged on the last day on how you lived. If you lived a life of get, get and give me, give me, only for yourself, it will be a sad judgment day for you. Heaven will be a place of rest for those who lived a life of service for Jesus and for others.
