Is it Possible to Know God?

How has God revealed himself to us?

  1. Natural or general revelation -- this is the observation of the universe.
  2. Specific revelation -- this is God’s word, the Bible.
  • Natural revelation.
    • A certain amount of God can be learned by the observation of the universe. Psalms 19:1-6: the heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament Showeth His handiwork.
    • A person cannot learn the will of God from the observation of the universe, but they Can learn of His power. Acts 14”15-17: God provides rain and fruitful seasons. Romans 1:18-20: the invisible things declare there is a God.
    • The universe has order and design.
    • The universe shows the power needed to create such a universe and to keep it Functioning.
    • Natural revelation offers the human no power to change their heart. It does not Tell of Jesus. It prepares the person to get ready for Jesus. They must still have Special revelation (the gospel story).
  • Special revelation.
    • God has revealed Himself to us by His many acts in the scriptures.
    • God has revealed Himself in the creation, the flood, life of Abraham and Moses. God revealed Himself in Christ -- John 14:2-9.
    • The gospel is written so we might believe that Jesus is the Son of God. John 20:30-31. It is the gospel that people must hear to be saved. Romans 1:16.
    • Special revelation concerns Christ and leads to salvation.
    • We do not have two revelations, but rather two aspects of God’s self-disclosure. God has two great books -- nature and the Bible

Conclusion: Is it possible to know God? The answer is yes. No matter where one lives on this planet, he is without excuse, because the heavens (nature) declares there is a God. It does not tell you who this creator is, but it clearly declares there is a God. It is then up to each person to seek out the Creator and Jesus tells us that we will find Him.

Matthew 7:7 “Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.”
