The Who, What, When, Where and Why of Church Discipline

When one reads the New Testament books written to the local churches, they will immediately read about brethren who are not living as they should. The local churches were instructed on how to deal with these brethren. Proper discipline is important for any congregation. It is more
than just an act of correcting and removing sin. It is an act of training brethren to help one another.

Scriptures Dealing With Church Discipline

  • Matthew 18:15-17. Ideally, private matters should not become church problems.
  • Romans 16:17-18. Any who would “sow discord” must be dealt with immediately.
  • I Corinthians 5:1-5, 9-13. Immorality must not be tolerated in the Church!
  • 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15. Those “walking disorderly” are out of step and must be disciplined for their own good.
  • I Timothy 1-18-20 and Titus 1:9-11. False teachers must be stopped because of their dangerous influence!

The Clear Purpose of Church Discipline

  • To encourage sinful brethren to repent and come back to Christ! James 5:19-20.
  • To protect the other members of the church from the harmful influence of sin and wickedness! I Corinthians 5:6

Conclusion: Discipline does not hinder the progress of the church. Rather, it keeps the church pure and focused on righteousness!
