Do We Crucify Christ Afresh?

The three who paid the highest compliment to our Savior in the time of His crucifixion were the
ones who were responsible for His death. Judas said “surely I have betrayed innocent blood.”
Yet, he betrayed Him into the hands of the enemy. It was Pilate who said “I find no fault in this
man.” Yet, he passed the death sentence on Him. The Roman Centurion said “Surely this was
the Son of God.” Yet, by his orders, He was crucified. Could it be that we compliment Christ
with our lips, and yet by our lives, we are guilty of crucifying Him afresh?

The writer of Hebrews states that it’s possible. Hebrews 6:6, “ . . .Seeing that they have
crucified themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to open shame.” Even though we may
claim Him to be the Son of God, we may fail to let Him be the ruler of our lives, in failing to be
obedient to His commands. Did we begin to destroy Christ who was formed in us at the time we
became Christians by failing to grow or being unfaithful? We are guilty. Hebrews 6:1-6 says if
we cause shame and reproach on the body of Christ, His Church, by ungodly behavior, we are
guilty. The very deeds that caused His death 1900 years ago can be the cause of crucifying
Him afresh today. They range from infidelity to envy to indifference. Any who are guilty of such
today are guilty of crucifying Him afresh no matter how they may compliment Him with their lips.
Perhaps there is no one listening to this message that would want to be among those who are
guilty of crucifying the Lord. It may be just those who are by indifference, a belief, or
unscriptural practice, yet unknowingly are crucifying Christ afresh.

It should cause us all to examine our position to see if we may be guilty of it in any of these
ways. It will be a terrible thing to stand before God on the day of judgment to find out too late
that we have been party to such a horrible deed. What is your relationship to the Lord as of
right now?
