Welcoming a New Evangelist
After many prayers and much effort by our elders, God is sending two new family members for the church at Brookhill: Jared and Bonnie Hagan. Jared has worked with the same church in Colorado Springs for 25 years. Leaving that familiar church family, as well as his own earthly family and the scenic mountain area he and his wife both love, is sure to be difficult. You, as members of their new family at Brookhill, can make a big difference in their transition to Alabama.
On talking with another preacher’s wife about the subject of beginning work with a new congregation, I was given some suggestions for helping a new minister and his family feel welcome. She said to remember that your new preacher has just “lost” his family and needs your help to feel that he belongs to his new family. “TREAT THEM LIKE FAMILY” was her most important recommendation. Luke 8:21
Another idea was to “PRAY FOR THEM AND LET THEM KNOW THAT YOU ARE PRAYING FOR THEM!” We have been praying for Jared and Bonnie in our worship services. Please be sure to pray for them at your home also. Matthew 9:37-38
There are some Christians who are only interested in themselves! This is not likely to be a problem at Brookhill, but be sure to let the Hagans know that “YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THEM AS INDIVIDUALS,” and make an effort to learn more about them, including their hobbies and interests. Philippians 2:4
BE THOUGHTFUL.” Do nice things to help welcome them to the area, and to help with all the work that goes into moving. Be hospitable, and invite them into your home so they can get to know you. Gift cards for food are helpful until they are settled into their new home. When they move into their house, they might like help with cleaning, moving or meals. Be thinking of ways to show your love to your new family members! Romans 12:10
BE ENCOURAGING. Please avoid criticizing the new preacher or comparing him to other preachers you have heard. God works through many different personalities! Please give new ideas for activities and evangelism a chance, and your best effort. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
